For anyone who spends a lot of time outdoors, in short skirts, or relaxing on the beach, there is certainly more than enough to worry about.  There’s making sure you put on sunscreen, ensuring that you have an excellent shave or wax, and of course, fretting about how you look in whatever swimsuit or outfit you’re putting on.  And one of the most common worry areas for women is actually far smaller than you might think: in fact, if you’re not looking too closely, you might not notice it at all.

The trouble?Varicose veins and spider veins.

These are the result of too much–or not enough–blood flow, and most frequently occur in the legs.  And while they can be rather unnoticeable, having to deal with a more obvious change in your appearance is more than enough for people to decide on procedures that can assist in eradicating or diminishing the presence of these different types of veins.

What is Sclerotherapy?

The procedure that takes care of removing varicose and spider veins is known as sclerotherapy, and for those a bit squeamish about visits to the doctor’s office, the good news is that is can be completed in less than an hour. Whether you’re prepping for a delightful trip to the beach in San Diego or readying yourself for a romp to the French Riviera, looking your best definitely feels considerably easier with this sort of medical assistance.

The entire sclerotherapy procedure takes between a half hour and 45 minutes, and is described as uncomfortable but not particularly painful. Patients are comfortably seated or lying down the entire time, while the doctor injects a solution that mostly consists of sodium chloride. The purpose for using this mixture is to shrink the veins, which is often noticeable right after swelling goes down post-procedure.  Patients can expect to see a bit of swelling and raised areas for up to 72 hours after the procedure. Sometimes, when larger veins are being targeted, there may be longer-term raised areas. For particularly large veins, there is occasionally a bit of puffiness that lasts a couple of months.

There are reasons aside from your own appearance to consider the benefits of sclerotherapy.  Larger varicose veins often result in a bit of itchiness, which can lead to far too much scratching.  Being able to shrink these veins and eradicate a source of pain or discomfort is an excellent idea, as well as a cosmetic benefit. And because this is a one-time procedure, the recovery time is not as troubling as if one had to continue to go back for repeat visits. For smaller veins, expect less time at the office, and even more time on the beach.
