Male Breast Reduction

Gynecomastia is the development or enlargement of breast tissue in males.  90% of adolescent boys will develop male breast enlargement to one extent or another.  And though it frequently resolves, it still persists in a great many men as they grow into adulthood.  It is thought to occur due to an imbalance of sex hormones (testosterone and estrogen) within males experiencing gynecomastia.  Other causes can include certain types of medication, diseases, marijuana and steroids.

Male Breast Reduction

Many men feel self conscious about having excess breast tissue and seek treatment through male breast reduction.  Surgery, liposuction or even a combination of the two can be performed to reduce the size of the breast.  Having male breast reduction surgery is much more mainstream then it was years ago, and you don’t have to have full “man boobs” to want to undergo the procedure.  Men of all ages who simply want to look a bit better by removing fat tissue in the breast are seeking treatment.

The Breast Reduction Surgery

Having male breast reduction is done through one of 2 ways as stated above.  The main reason why excision would be performed is if the fat is in 1 localized area and can be easily cut out.  If there is fat spread out throughout the chest area that needs to be removed Dr. Heimer will use liposuction to remove it.  Liposuction uses a small skinny stainless steel cannula (looks like a stainless steel straw) that can be inserted through a tiny incision.  This is the most common method of male breast reduction.
